It also prevents the guitar's back top from developing a hump, as the strings do not wind around the bridge and slowly pull it upwards under the strings tension. Even with a 12 hole bridge you still have the potential hump issue in the long run. The barrels do not touch the surface of the top. You could easily slide a piece of paper underneath. I have three different woods and shades. Ebony, Ironwood dark pattern and Ironwood light pattern. They all look amazing. Very durable, I guarantee them for the life of the guitar.
